Mal didnât say anything to Luka at the moment, but heâd referred to the vampire race as âus,â not âthem.â Ahmose was right, he was finally accepting his new life.
ON THE TAPAJÃS RIVER
Donovan dressed carefully in the proper clothes for this area. When on the river, because the word rain in rainforest was more than a romantic idea, your clothes, shoes, and gear mattered. Heâd have to take Chione into town whether she stayed with him or not, because she did not have any clothing appropriate for wear here. He smiled while he slid a sharp knife into its sheath and slipped the sheath onto a belt that held several other small tools often handy out here. The handgun would never be far away now that he knew McCall was willing to kill him to stop him.
The door to the bedroom opened with a small squeak and he looked up.
She came through it, yawning, her hair loose, wearing his shirt again. He never wanted the shirt back, he just wanted to spend the rest of his life seeing her wearing it. And taking it off of her.
âGood evening, Donovan. Did you sleep well?â
âBetter than I should have considering I nearly died yesterday. You were a comfort.â
âThat makes me happy. So what are we doing tonight?â
âTravel can be dangerous at night in this area. I plan to get you to a little town about forty minutes from hereâ¦â
âDonovan, weâve discussed this. Iâm not going anywhere, so get used to it.â
âI get that. Okay, I concede, but you canât go into the rainforest wearing designer jeans and a cute sweater. I need to get you some new gear. We need some groceries.â
âOkay. Iâll put some clothes on.â Chione smiled. âWell, a few more, anyway.â
She disappeared back into the bedroom and Donovan turned away, rolling his eyes. Damn it! He was so fucking hooked on that woman. Vampire or not, she was the most sexy, charming woman heâd ever known. And more than that, even though he still didnât know her too well, he was certain that she was also one of the most honorable and kind. He could see himself with her for the long haul, for the rest of his life. They could work side by side all night to help this ailing world that they both loved, then make love all day. He couldnât imagine a more perfect life. Was that his destiny?
Donovan chuffed and collected everything that he needed for their road trip. He didnât believe in destiny. But did destiny believe in him? He scoffed at the unintentional poetry.
She needed to get out here and quickly, so that he could get back to the life he understood.
When she showed back up, dressed in the tight designer jeans heâd mentioned, and a thin sweater, braless, an incredibly erotic image, he nearly forgot his intention of taking her into town. This woman should never have any clothes on that body!
